The Story of Melusine
Melusine, a foundational figure in European folklore, serves as a complex archetype of feminine sovereignty that bridges the human and supernatural worlds
The story of Melusine is a fascinating look at a woman who held all the cards, even in a world that wasn't built for her. As a powerful water spirit who marries a mortal named Raymondin, she’s not a "damsel"—she is the one building their empire. Through her supernatural agency, she constructs grand castles, secures vast territories, begets ten sons, and establishes the illustrious House of Lusignan, thereby serving as the dynasty's foundational power. Their marriage comes with one simple, firm rule: he has to leave her alone every Saturday so she can have her private time. It’s a clear boundary that keeps her independence intact.
When Raymondin eventually breaks that promise and looks through the keyhole on her secret bath—where he sees she’s half-serpent—everything changes. But instead of apologizing or shrinking away, Melusine owns who she is. She leaves him behind, reclaiming her freedom and stepping back into her true, supernatural self. Even after she vanishes, she remains a powerful presence, acting as a protector of her bloodline. She’s a great example of a figure who refuses to be fully tamed or defined by someone else, proving that her authority and strength were always hers to control.
About
The name Trace & Talisman reflects the two halves of my creative process. To Trace is to investigate—to follow the faint, dusty lines of history, folklore, and ancient symbols to see where they lead. The Talisman is the result: a physical, textured object of power and beauty meant to protect and inspire its keeper. Together, they represent a journey from the magick of the old world into your world.
My work is created in the quiet clarity of the early morning, where I trace the symbols of ancient deities to create physical talismans for your home.
To build my pieces, I draw upon thirty years of mastery in jewelry design to influence this intricate, hand-worked process. I layer my own textures and drawings with hand-selected fragments from the works of long-dead masters, blending classical composition with the precision of a jeweler’s eye. Each piece is an original, hand-wrought collage of history and spirit—a physical manifestation of the myths I trace.
